Why music giants are suing this AI company?

We’ll discuss why the big three music giants are uniting against AI companies and how Claude’s latest version might be the best for business enterprise users.

1 big thing: Universal Music Group, Sony Music and Warner Records are suing this AI company

Music giants have united against one cause. Major record labels, including Universal Music Group (UMG), Sony Music Entertainment, and Warner Records, have sued two AI music companies, Suno and Udio, for copyright infringement.

The accusations:

  • Unauthorized Use of Music: The lawsuits allege that Suno and Udio used copyrighted music from various artists across different genres to train their AI models without securing the necessary licenses.

  • Massive Copyright Infringement: The RIAA is seeking damages of up to $150,000 per infringed work, highlighting the extensive scale of the alleged violations.

  • Lack of Transparency: Both companies are accused of hiding the extent of their copyright infringement. When questioned, Suno claimed that its training data was "confidential business information," a stance Udio also took according to the lawsuit.

The defense:

  • Suno’s CEO, Mikey Shulman, defends their technology as "transformative," stating that it creates new content rather than copying existing works.

  • However, evidence presented in the lawsuits includes AI-generated songs that closely mimic well-known tracks, such as Chuck Berry’s "Johnny B. Goode" and ABBA’s "Dancing Queen."

Why this matters: AI-generated music has become a contentious issue on platforms like TikTok and YouTube. Earlier this year, music by UMG artists, including Taylor Swift, was temporarily removed from TikTok due to licensing disputes partly driven by AI concerns. YouTube has also implemented measures to remove AI-generated music upon request from rights holders.

Artists and industry groups fear AI-generated content could undermine their earnings and creative rights. The Artist Rights Alliance has publicly demanded that AI companies stop using AI to infringe on the rights of human artists.

Anthropic releases ‘most intelligent’ AI model

After just 3 months, Anthropic launches its latest AI model: Claude 3.5 Sonnet. Claiming it can rival or surpass OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Google’s Gemini.

What’s new? 

  • According to Anthropic, this new model is twice as fast and outperforms competitors like OpenAI in key areas such as coding and text-based reasoning.

  • Co-founder and president Daniela Amodei emphasized that this model is aimed at being the top choice for enterprise businesses.

  • Anthropic has been testing Claude 3.5 Sonnet with a small group of users, including major companies like Pfizer. The pharmaceutical giant uses the chatbot to support research and development in drug discovery, demonstrating the model's capability to handle complex, high-level intellectual tasks.

Between the lines: This release is part of its ongoing rivalry with other major AI developers like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft. Anthropic is also launching a new feature called Artifacts, which enables real-time collaboration on coding, documents, and other content generated by the Claude chatbot. This feature enhances the usability and functionality of Claude 3.5 Sonnet, making it more than just a chatbot.
