Plus: How much does NVIDIA’s new chip costs?

Hey AI-preneurs,

Welcome back to AI Odyssey - where we explore the latest happenings in the fast-changing world of AI.

Today's issue features a leadership shakeup at Microsoft AI to the mind-blowing possibility of AI mind reading (seriously, is nothing sacred anymore?).

We've also got the scoop on NVIDIA's new, super-powered (and super-expensive) AI chip, along with some juicy rumors about OpenAI's not-so-secret training methods.

Let's dive in!

Microsoft names DeepMind co-founder as CEO of new AI unit

Meet the CEO of Microsoft's newest AI unit, Mustafa Suleyman. A well-known British Artificial Intelligence pioneer.

Suleyman is currently the head of AI startup Inflection AI, but is best known as the co-founder of DeepMind, a leading UK AI firm that was acquired by Google in 2014.

Suleyman will take on the role of Executive Vice President and CEO of Microsoft AI, reporting directly to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

The new Microsoft AI group will focus on products like Microsoft Copilot.

Karén Simonyan, another Inflection AI co-founder and its chief scientist, is also joining Microsoft as Chief Scientist for Microsoft AI, along with several other Inflection employees.

It will be interesting to see where Microsoft AI is heading now with Suleyman's background at DeepMind.

NVIDIA’s Blackwell AI chip to cost between $30,000 to $40,000

NVIDIA has unveiled its latest and greatest AI chip, the Blackwell B200, at the recent GTC 2024 event.

However, this cutting-edge technology comes with a hefty price tag of $30,000 to $40,000 per unit, surpassing NVIDIA's previous top-tier predecessor, the H100 Hopper AI processor.

The Blackwell B200 is the result of NVIDIA's massive $10 billion investment in research and development, and it promises to outperform all other AI chips on the market. The B200 is not only more powerful but also more energy-efficient.

NVIDIA introduced three variants of the Blackwell AI accelerators: the B100, the B200, and the GB200, which combines two Blackwell chips with an ARM-based CPU.

OpenAI uses YouTube videos to train AI models?

OpenAI CTO Mira Murati

That's the wild theory brewing about OpenAI's latest innovation, Sora. Apparently, some AI experts think OpenAI might be using a secret weapon to train its video AI.

YouTube videos.

However, the problem is…Google prohibits scraping YouTube videos using bots and automated methods, bans downloading content for commercial purposes, and throttles attempts at high-volume downloads of YouTube data.

When asked directly about using YouTube videos to train Sora, OpenAI has been playing it coy. They only stated Sora used "licensed sources and publicly available content" but did not confirm or deny using YouTube data at scale.

Whispers suggest they might be using some "creative methods" to access YouTube's vast content library.

This has led to an "open secret" of speculation about OpenAI's methods in the AI community. On how it obtains the immense video datasets required to train AI models like Sora, despite Google's restrictions around scraping and mass downloading YouTube content.
