👀 OpenAI, Google, Meta: What's their common thread?

Plus: You can now generate Spotify playlists from prompts...

Hey, AI-preneurs!

Welcome back to another edition of AI Odyssey, where we keep things brief, lively, and packed with surprises... (and perhaps our AI art is showcasing some memes today 😎)

Let's dive right in.

OpenAI transcribed over a million hours of YouTube videos to train GPT-4

So, it seems the big AI companies are really starting to feel the squeeze when it comes to getting their hands on enough quality data to train their latest models.

OpenAI, Google, YouTube, Meta - they're all struggling with this issue.

But OpenAI got a little desperate and reportedly transcribed over 1 million hours of YouTube videos to train its GPT-4 model, even though this was likely a legally questionable practice.

But OpenAI not the only bad guy…

Google and Meta have also been dipping into copyrighted stuff like book content and news articles without permission. They're really scraping the bottom of the barrel to find enough data to train their AI.

What’s next?

The companies are running up against the limits of available training data, with some predictions that they may outpace new content creation by 2028.

Proposed solutions include generating synthetic training data or using "curriculum learning" techniques, but these approaches are still unproven.

It'll be interesting to see how this all plays out and whether they end up crossing any more legal lines in the process.

Guess we'll have to stay tuned!

Spotify launches personalized AI playlists, you can build one using prompts

The idea is, you can just type in a prompt - like, I don't know, maybe something like "songs to jam out to while I'm doing the dishes" - and the AI will put together a whole playlist tailored just for you.

Pretty handy, right?

And the best part is, you can keep tweaking the playlist after it's generated - you can tell the AI to make it "less upbeat" or "more pop-y" or whatever.

How are the playlists made?

  • Spotify is leveraging its understanding of users' music tastes to personalize the playlists it creates.

  • The technology behind the AI playlists uses large language models to understand the user's intent, and then Spotify's own personalization algorithms to select the appropriate songs.

  • The AI playlist feature is currently in beta testing in the UK and Australia, and will be refined and expanded in the coming months.

Not the first rodeo:

This builds on Spotify's previous AI-powered features, like the AI DJ that provides personalized song recommendations.

It's all part of Spotify's bigger push to leverage AI in all sorts of ways - not just for playlists, but also things like summarizing podcast episodes and even generating AI-voiced ads.

Gotta stay ahead of the curve, you know?
