Crazy research out of Alibaba Group

Alibaba Group's research team has developed a new AI system called EMO that can generate realistic videos of people speaking and singing, even if they are deceased.

This technology raises several ethical concerns, prompting discussions about the boundaries of AI and the sensitive nature of topics like necromancy.

Here's how it works:

  • EMO takes a single reference image and audio recording (like singing or talking) and uses it to generate a video of the person speaking or singing with realistic facial expressions and head movements.

  • The system can even adjust the video length to match the audio.

While the technology is impressive, it sparks ethical debates:

  • Is it appropriate to use AI to create such realistic portrayals of deceased individuals?

  • Could this be used to encourage the deep fakes?

  • Does it blur the line between reality and simulation?

These are more negative use cases of such tech advancements than positive ones.  As AI continues to evolve, it's crucial to have open discussions about its ethical implications and how it’s used.

Adobe previews new AI composer that lets anyone create music

Adobe is entering the AI music creation space with Project Music GenAI Control. This platform lets users:

  • Generate music from text descriptions: Describe the desired mood and genre ("happy dance," "sad jazz") and let AI create a piece for you.

  • Customize the results: Fine-tune aspects like tempo, intensity, and structure within the same workflow.

  • Extend or remix existing music: Lengthen tracks, create loops, or remix sections to fit your needs.

However, Project Music GenAI Control is still in the research stage and lacks a user interface.

Adobe acknowledges the concerns for deceptive purposes like creating deep fakes, imitating existing artists, and copyright issues.

Abode claims it will take steps to mitigate them:

  • Training on licensed/public domain data: They aim to avoid copyright infringement by using authorized data for training.

  • Watermarking tech (under development): This could help identify music generated by the tool.

Despite the challenges, Adobe believes AI music creation can coexist with traditional music creation and inspire new musical ideas.
