Microsoft is building a large AI model: Meet MAI-1

Microsoft is training a new large AI model called MAI-1 worth $10B.

It will be large enough to compete with models from Google, Anthropic, and OpenAI.

Here’s what you need to know:

• MAI-1 is overseen by Mustafa Suleyman, the former Google AI leader who recently joined Microsoft from AI startup Inflection which Microsoft acquired.
  

• With around 500 billion parameters, MAI-1 will be far larger than Microsoft's previous open-source models but still smaller than OpenAI's GPT-4 model with over 1 trillion parameters.
  

• MAI-1 is all Microsoft's own thing, separate from the OpenAI models powering their current Copilot AI. 

Microsoft is compiling a large training data corpus for MAI-1 from sources like previous model outputs, internet data, and OpenAI's GPT-4 output.

Word is, if things go well in these next few weeks, we might even get a sneak peek at MAI-1 during Microsoft's Build conference later this month.

Stack Overflow signs deal with OpenAI🤝

This is BIG. 

OpenAI just announced they are partnering with Stack Overflow, the Q&A forum for software developers to use it as a database for LLM.

The partnership aims to improve OpenAI's models on programming-related tasks over time. In return, Stack Overflow will benefit from OpenAI's expertise in developing new AI integrations on its platform.

It's a pretty big pivot for Stack Overflow, who used to hate on ChatGPT and initially banned its responses from their site over low-quality AI outputs.

However, developers increasingly use AI tools, prompting Stack Overflow to pursue monetization via licensing deals with AI companies like OpenAI and Google.

They're letting AI companies license their top-notch data to ensure the AI outputs stay legit and devs keep flocking to their platform.

The first AI-powered features from the OpenAI partnership will roll out by the end of June 2024.

This year’s Met Gala theme is AI deepfakes

It’s Met Gala season again!

But this time, AI also joined the fashion party. 🤭

And it was so hyper-realistic that even fooled Katy Perry’s mom

“Katy Perry. That’s it,” one X post read. In the photo, Katy Perry wears a massive gown decorated with three-dimensional floral appliqués. As the pearlescent gown drapes to the ground, its long train fades into realistic-looking moss, which cascades across the beige and red Met Gala carpet.

But the real ones know that the Met Gala carpet was white and green as part of the “Garden of Time” theme;

That’s the telltale sign that this viral image of Perry is fake. Yet it already has 10 million views on X and over 300,000 likes.

Similarly, the internet circulated a fake image of Rihana’s Met Gala look with over 2.6 million views. 

But AI is still missing the tiny marks like the real patterns on the carpet, the flowers along the stair railings, and whether or not the paparazzi in the background look a little funky.

This is a constant reminder that we can’t believe everything we see online.
