ChatGPT can now generate images, too
A.I.-generated images made using OpenAIโs DALL-E 3 (Credit: OpenAI)
OpenAI has unveiled an impressive update to its ChatGPT chatbot, allowing it to generate highly detailed images. This new capability is thanks to the integration of the latest version of OpenAI's image generator, DALL-E 3, into ChatGPT. The improved DALL-E 3 can create convincing images, particularly excelling in rendering content featuring text, numbers, and human hands. With this groundbreaking update, ChatGPT has solidified its position as a multifaceted hub for generative A.I., now capable of generating text, images, sounds, software, and other digital media autonomously. This development further fuels the ongoing competition among tech giants in Silicon Valley to lead the way in A.I. advancements. While the potential of this image-generating technology is vast, concerns about its misuse for spreading disinformation persist. OpenAI has taken measures to mitigate these risks by incorporating tools to prevent problematic content and limiting the model's ability to mimic specific artistic styles. DALL-E 3 will be available to the public through ChatGPT Plus, a subscription service costing $20 per month, with the aim of ensuring responsible usage of this powerful technology. ๐Dig deeper
GitHub Copilot competitor raises $126 million
Former GitHub CTO Jason Warner has raised an impressive $126 million in funding for his new startup, Poolside, which aims to compete with his former employer's GitHub Copilot, the leading AI-based coding assistant. Poolside is focusing on specialized large-language models (LLMs) tailored to fields like math, physics, and software code, rather than general-purpose LLMs like OpenAI's.
The startup plans to develop an LLM even larger than OpenAI's GPT-4, with the hope that a bigger model will offer emergent capabilities and excel in areas such as mathematical problem-solving. Poolside's substantial funding will support its ambition, as it seeks to challenge GitHub and other AI coding competitors in the market. Poolside's approach involves renting servers with Nvidia H100 chips and relocating its headquarters to Paris to attract AI researchers.
The startup's rapid fundraising success has drawn attention, with Felicis founder Aydin Senkut noting the opportunity to back founders with a proven track record and a specific mission. As Poolside faces competition from various AI coding startups, GitHub, and others, Warner believes that developers will ultimately choose the coding assistant with the best capabilities, rather than relying on tools from established software vendors. ๐Dig deeper
Toyota is making AI-trained breakfast bots in a โkindergarten for robotsโ
Toyota Research Institute (TRI) has developed AI-powered robots capable of performing breakfast-related tasks. These robots were trained in a "kindergarten for robots" using generative AI, allowing them to learn tasks like whisking eggs through a sense of touch rather than extensive coding.
Teaching robots like humans: Researchers at TRI provided these robots with a tactile sense, enabling them to "feel" their actions, making complex tasks more manageable. A human "teacher" initially demonstrates the skills, and the robots learn autonomously over time. This approach significantly reduces the time and effort required for training.
Advancements in AI-driven robotics: Toyota's goal is to create "Large Behavior Models" (LBMs) for robots, similar to how language models are trained by observing human writing patterns. These LBMs would allow robots to generalize and perform new tasks they've never been explicitly taught. The researchers have already trained over 60 challenging skills and aim to increase that number to 1,000 by the end of 2024. Other companies like Google and Tesla are also exploring similar AI-driven approaches to teach robots new skills, potentially paving the way for more versatile and autonomous robotic systems. ๐Dig deeper
Amazon tries to give hardware an AI shine
Despite earlier reports of cost-cutting measures and layoffs, Amazon is doubling down on its hardware business. The company introduced over 10 new devices at its recent annual fall device event, including a soundbar and a new device category called the Echo Hub. This move signals Amazon's continued commitment to hardware innovation.
GenAI-powered Alexa: Amazon unveiled a GenAI-enhanced version of Alexa, incorporating generative artificial intelligence into its voice assistant. This technology, set to launch early next year, highlights Amazon's focus on staying competitive in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
Cloud business ambitions: While a GenAI-powered Alexa is a significant step, Amazon's true aim is to integrate GenAI deeper into its cloud business, AWS. With AWS generating over $85 billion annually, Amazon's upcoming AWS Re:Invent event is expected to feature AI-related announcements aimed at narrowing the gap between Amazon, Microsoft, and Google in the cloud computing space. This move underscores Amazon's ambition to expand its AI technology well beyond its corporate cloud customer base. ๐Dig deeper
