OpenAI touts ‘scientific approach’ to measure catastrophic risk

OpenAI is rolling out a "scientific approach" to tackle the potentially catastrophic risks associated with cutting-edge AI models. The initiative introduces a 27-page preparedness framework, utilizing a matrix-style evaluation system to gauge risks across various categories, from the likelihood of malicious use to potential distribution of harmful information. Only models scoring "medium" or below after mitigations can be deployed, with a commitment to halt development if risks remain critical.

OpenAI's CEO handles day-to-day decisions, but the board has veto power based on risk assessments. The organization has three teams focusing on safety, superalignment, and a new unit evaluating powerful models during development. OpenAI emphasizes the need for industry-wide adoption and governance improvements, envisioning its approach as a potential model for regulation in the AI landscape.

TomTom and Microsoft are making their own K.I.T.T

At least, that’s what it sounds like in TomTom’s description of its upcoming Azure-based Generative AI voice assistant for vehicles.

The company says it’s built on TomTom’s Digital Cockpit, and allows drivers to “converse naturally with their vehicle,” verbally control navigation and locate stops en route, and even control onboard systems like opening windows or adjusting temperatures. It’ll be demonstrated at CES in January.

Bill Gates: AI is about to supercharge innovation

Bill Gates predicts a major AI revolution in 2024, anticipating widespread adoption in the U.S. in 18–24 months and in Africa in three years. Despite his enthusiasm, Gates admits to grappling with AI integration and emphasizes the universal struggle. He sees AI as a catalyst for equal opportunities, especially in global health challenges and education. The Gates Foundation is working on AI solutions for antibiotic resistance and high-risk pregnancies. Gates envisions "mind-blowing" tools like personalized tutors (e.g., Khanmigo and MATHia) reshaping education. In a nutshell, Gates foresees AI not just innovating but revolutionizing various aspects of our lives.

AI could be humanity’s last chance to meet climate goals. Here’s why

In the race against time to meet Paris Agreement goals, AI emerges as a game-changer. Current emission trends are on a dangerous upward trajectory, but AI offers a lifeline. Recognized at COP28, it could slash 5 to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 – equivalent to the EU's annual output.

Smart policies for climate-positive AI: Policymakers hold the cards in steering AI towards climate solutions. Clear goals and focus areas, like flood-resilient farming, are essential for effective AI-driven innovation.

Immediate impact in high-emission sectors: Prioritize AI in sectors with hefty emissions for quick wins. No need for a complete overhaul – optimize existing systems in aviation, manufacturing, and more with AI.

Green energy for AI: Ensure AI's computing muscle runs on clean, green energy. Smarter grids, powered by AI, are the way forward for sustainable energy.

AI isn't just a buzzword; it's a climate hero in the making. From predicting floods in Singapore to greening data centers in Germany, it's already making waves. Policymakers can supercharge this tech for climate action with savvy policies, ensuring a down payment on our emissions reduction goals in this critical decade.
